WELCOME TO OUR WEB SITE
Windmill Point Yacht Club was formed as the Detroit River Racing Association on March 11, 1944, to promote Unlimited Power Boat Racing on the Detroit River.
The first headquarters of the DRRA was the former Huck Estate at the head of the Detroit River, near the Windmill Point Light.  The name of the club was changed to Windmill Point Yacht Club on August 1, 1953.  The club activities and membership grew until the city of Detroit took over the property in 1962.
Meetings were held at various locations until 1969 when W.P.Y.C. obtained a lease for waterfront property from Sinbad's Marina, 11200 Freud, in Detroit.  Membership expanded and the building was completely renovated but was destroyed by fire in 1973.  A new metal building was finished by 1975 and a strong, year-round Yacht Club continued. In 1979, the city of Detroit purchased Sinbad's Marina, the metal building was destroyed by fire, and W.P.Y.C. was without a home again. In April of 1981, the Membership purchased the property in Fair Haven and moved in during June.  All Members who had stayed with W.P.Y.C. during the hard times are Vested Charter Members.  The clubhouse was renovated, old out buildings were removed and the wood docks were repaired.  A steel seawall was added, along with a few docks, during 1990.
Female memberships were established in 1986 and our first lady commodore was elected in November of 1992.  W.P.Y.C. obtained its first Liquor License in March of 1993.  W.P.Y.C. is now a proud member of the Anchor Bay Yachting Association and participates in the Social and Charitable Activities of the Anchor Bay area and helps to promote Safe Boating on Lake St. Clair.

Windmill Point Yacht Club is a non profit organization, with frontage to Lake St. Clair. There are boat wells and room for visitor's boats. There's plenty of room for cars, mobile homes and campers. The Club has a variety of activities during the year, including steak-outs, fish fries and holiday parties. Events are open to all members & responsible guests of members. We have had a variety of DJs, who have added to the excitement of our theme parties, such as our Halloween and New Years Eve bashes. Theres a jukebox, pool table and pinball machine for added fun. Happy Hour is every Friday night, from 5:30 until 8:00 p.m. Drinks are discounted during this time and a light meal is usually available, for a small fee. All A.B.Y.A. Members are welcome to join us for any of our events. Please be sure to sign the guest book. Your children are invited to attend but must vacate the bar area after 9PM. The club also raises money for needy families and has a distribution at Christmas time. Of course they do organize Club Boat Trips, including overnight trips, which are great fun. We invite you to join our Club if you enjoy good fun and people. The Club members are from all walks of life, including Plumbers, Mechanics, Engineers, Bankers, Politicians, Carpenters, etc. We even had President Truman as a member, at one time. The membership is quite reasonable and allows you to visit any other A.B.Y.A. Yacht club.
